California - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

All U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years of age and residents of the state, and are neither under felony conviction, nor adjudicated to be mentally incompetent, may register to vote in California. Completed voter registration cards may be returned in person or by mail. Cards are available at public libraries, post offices, the County Elections office, and many state agencies, or by calling 800/345-VOTE (8683). Residents may also register to vote at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, be certain your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! To obtain an absentee ballot, apply in writing to your County Elections office. Absentee ballot applications must be received at least seven days prior to an election. When requesting your application, be certain to include your name, address (where you are registered and where the ballot should be mailed), and the election in which you're voting absentee. Be sure to sign and date the application. In order for your vote to count, your completed ballot must be received by 8:00 p.m., on Election Day.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

California hosts open primary elections, which means that all registered voters can vote in the primary election. Voters are presented with a blanket ballot, which includes the names of all official candidates, and they are allowed to vote across party lines for the candidates of their choice.
FOR MORE INFORMATION

For additional information on the elections, please contact the California Secretary of State Elections Division at 916/657-2166. For information on specific party requirements, contact your State Republican Party at 818/841-5210, or your State Democratic Party at 916/442-5707.
