Alabama - Voter Registration Information

VOTER REGISTRATION

All U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years of age and residents of the state, and are neither convicted of a felony, nor legally declared mentally incompetent, are eligible to vote in Alabama. To register to vote, appear in person at the Board of Registrars Office at your County Courthouse or at your local Department of Motor Vehicles. Mail-in voter registration cards are available at libraries, public universities, offices of public assistance, and many county and state offices. To receive a registration form by mail, call the Alabama Voter Registration Department at 334/242-7210.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS

If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, make sure your voice is heard 5 days prior by voting via absentee ballot! In Alabama, you can vote absentee in person at the elections office in your County Courthouse on May 23th for the primary election, and on Oct. 24th for the general election. To obtain your ballot by mail, make a written request for a ballot to the election office in your County Courthouse. Be sure to include your name and address (where you are registered to vote and where you want the ballot mailed), specify the election in which you wish to vote (e.g., primary or general election), and include your signature. In order for your vote to count, your completed ballot must be returned no later than noon on Election Day. All mailed ballots must be postmarked no later than the day prior to the election.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS

Alabama has an open primary system, which means all registered voters can vote in the primary election. You can vote only in one party's primary, however, so voters must choose a party ballot at the polls. When requesting an absentee ballot for the primary election, be sure to specify the party ballot that you want.
FOR MORE INFORMATION

For additional information on the elections, please contact the Alabama State Elections Department at 334/242-7210. For information on specific party requirements, contact your State Republican Party at 205/212-5900, or your State Democratic Party at 334/262-2221.
