VOTER REGISTRATION All U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years of age, are residents of the state, and have no felony convictions, are eligible to vote in Alaska. To register to vote, mail a completed voter registration application card, which is available at public libraries, post offices, and many county and state offices -- particularly the State Division of Elections office. You can also register in person at your local elections office, usually located at City Hall, or at the Department of Motor Vehicles. If you miss the mail-in voter registration deadline, you can still register in person at the polls on Election Day -- just be sure to bring a valid form of identification. Voters who register on Election Day, however, are ineligible to vote for state and local offices and issues, only federal offices.
ABSENTEE BALLOTS If you know you will be unable to make it to the polls on Election Day, make sure your voice is heard by voting via absentee ballot! In Alaska, you can vote via absentee ballot by mail, by fax, or in person. To obtain your ballot by mail, make a written request to the Division of Elections at least two weeks prior to an election. Your request should include your name, address (both where you are registered and where you want the ballot mailed), the election in which you wish to vote, the ballot you wish to receive and your signature. In order for your vote to count, your ballot must be returned no later than Election Day. To vote via absentee ballot in person, appear at the Division of Elections office in any voting district as early as 15 days prior to an election, including Election Day. To vote via fax, contact the Alaska State Board of Elections for a ballot at 907/465-4611. Ballots may be faxed to 907/465-3203.
PRIMARY ELECTIONS The legislature passed a bill in 2001 that closed the primaries for all political parties in the state. There is now a ballot for each recognized party (Alaskan Independence, Democrat, Libertarian, and Republican). Voters registered as affiliated with a party will vote that party's ballot. Voters not affiliated with a political party (undeclared or non-partisan) will be able to choose any party's ballot. Each party's ballot will have only that party's candidates on it.
FOR MORE INFORMATION For additional information on the elections, please contact the Alaska State Board of Elections at 907/465-4611. For information on specific party requirements, contact your State Republican Party at 907/276-4467, or your State Democratic Party at 907/258-3050.
